5 Tips for Safely Cycling at Night

For unprepared and uninitiated cyclists, riding in the dark can be an intimidating experience. However, proper preparation and the right equipment can help ease the anxiety and improve overall safety. Here are a few simple ways you can prepare for a night ride or bicycle commute:

Equip Adequate Lighting

When riding at night, visibility is key and bicycle lights are the most effective way to make yourself seen. A powerful headlight will not only help you see the road, but also help others see you. Additionally, consider a bright red flashing tail light to make your position more obvious for drivers. Just make sure the lights you choose comply with your city’s local regulations.

Wear Reflective Accessories

Many cycling clothes include reflective elements that help make you visible — even without lights. This doesn’t mean lights aren’t important, but wearing reflective clothes will further help ensure you are seen. Some clothes specifically designed for cycling or running include reflective elements, but you can also add reflective strips to your backpack, helmet, and bicycle frame for easy results.

Ride Predictably

Many car drivers already find cyclists unpredictable — this can lead to near misses, collisions, and worse. While it is also the car driver’s responsibility to share the road safely, you can help improve your chances of making it home safely by being as predictable as possible. Examples of predictable riding techniques include:

  • using hand signals when turning
  • obeying traffic laws
  • vehicular cycling (cycling in the same way a car would drive the route)

Locate and Opt for Well-Lit Routes

If you are familiar with the area you’re riding in, opt for well-lit routes where you are more likely to be seen by drivers. Poorly-lit and unfamiliar areas could lead to less predictable riding and increase your risk of injury. Familiarising yourself with the route in advance will help you identify the safest route.

In the case of cycling at night, a busier and better-lit street could be safer than a quiet but dark side street. However, it is up to you to assess your route options and find the one that works best for you.

Keep Your Bike Well-Maintained

As you probably noticed in the earlier tips, a lot of general cycling advice is just further reinforced when it comes to riding in the dark and maintenance is no exception. Ensuring your bicycle maintenance is up to date is a great way to improve your night riding safety. This includes:

  • checking brake responsiveness
  • keeping tires properly inflated
  • ensuring gears function smoothly

Because alertness is key when cycling at night, you’ll want to minimise the chances of anything going wrong.
